Green light for free wireless in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will go ahead with the free state-wide Wireless@Penang project after the World Health Organisation found no health risks attached to wireless networks.

Citing research papers and authoritative reports, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said there was no conclusive evidence that radio frequencies emitted by wireless transmission could cause cancer.

He said the amount of radiation absorbed by a human body from a wireless environment was considerably less than direct exposure to radio and television.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will run safety checks on the Wifi transmission points before the full launch to ensure the frequency level is in accordance with the international safety standards. All universities and many public outlets are covered by Wifi, so there is no reason not to extend the services statewide.”

Lim also said that having a statewide wireless network for Internet access, and bringing the service to all segments of society, would help the government achieve its vision of transforming Penang into an international city, one that was a location of choice for investors, destination of choice for tourists and habitat of choice for residents.
